The philosophy of Homeopathy, like other holistic remedies, is based on the principle that body, spirit and emotion form a totality together. Samuel
Hahnemann (1755-1843) who is considered the founder of homeopathy had the conviction: “similia similibus curentur”, in english: “like is cured by like”. Moreover in one of his speeches he pointed out the similarities in effect and application with human and animal.
In classic homeopathy the aim is to determine the so-called constitutional remedy. The homeopathic type is determined by observation and by getting information concerning the ailments of the human or animal. The homeopath then chooses one remedy, the constitutional remedy, which must provide stimulance for the self healing capacities.
Some constitution types are quite easy to recognize due to their psychological and / or physical innate predisposition or acquired qualities.
Two clear examples are:
The Aurum metallicum dog – is full blooded , powerful & heavy built. It is lively and enthusiastic, dominant and self assured, sometimes looking for fights.
The Ignatia dog is often found by the Golden Retrievers. Mostly bitches, always friendly, not extravagant, seemingly peaceful, a little shy and introverted.
Within diagnostics the individual diagnosis is prior. So ‘limping right leg after action” is not enough to come to a diagnosis.
The classical homeopath looks at the symptoms of a disease as an unbalance.
By means of questions & answers (for example: since when is he limping, what makes it worse, what else does he suffer, how does he react to…) one tries to get a complete picture of physical and other complaints, the character, the living surroundings . All this information concludes into a type and so to the right choice of constitutional remedy.
Back to our Ignatia dog for a moment… It is known that this type of dog can suffer from specific skin diseases. Seemingly relaxed under all circumstances, underneath she often is not. This dog digests in silence. Inside tension builds up. At one moment it will reach a point where the body can’t handle it any longer . As distraction, the dog will start to lick & bite it self, it’s legs and fur. This behavior can become compulsive, and possibly become worse.
The homeopathic diagnosis will lead to the remedy Ignatia, matching the total picture of physical & emotional symptoms.
To identify the type of constitution , especially with animals , is not always so easy, therefore, homeopathy has been adapted, already since a long time and applied in a symptomatic way as well.
An example: Arsenicum Album causes diarrhea & vomiting in healthy humans and animals, fast losing of weight and exhaustion. According to the method described above Arsenicum album in serial dilution D6 will give relieve to stomach ‘flu.
In other words; what can make a healthy animal or human ill, can be healing in a serial dilution.
Homeopathic remedies can be made from plants, minerals & animal materials. The research about the working substance of an element did not change since the days of Hahnemann. A healthy person takes an undiluted substance for a certain length of time and writes down every day what he or she feels or observes. Based on these observations it is decided which ailments can be healed with the dilution made from that substance.
Until today the list of preparations & their use is still growing.
Besides all this the use of (strong) dilutions play an important role. The processes that are in balance will not be disturbed by the small stimulus coming from such a substance. The same small stimulus does effect the process in the organism which are not stable and will stimulate a positive healing tendency.
The explanation for the effectiveness is that by the shaking process (‘succussion’ ) of the pure substance, its energy will get solved in the preparation. The more being diluted, the more shaken as well.
Next to the ‘simple’ ( homogenous ) remedies, nowadays there are also the so-called complex remedies, composed out of various components.
In the ‘Nosode’ therapy the homeopathic principle is also being used. A nosode is a dilution made from the substance of a disease. It is comparable to a vaccin. the difference being that in the nosode there is only the energy/vibration of the causative agent of the disease, not the agent itself.
In conflict with what is generally thought, homeopathic remedies CAN be harmful in use and can have side effects. A big danger as well, is the blind banning of regular remedies.
On the other hand, it is possible due to the camouflage effect of regular medication that the picture of the illness is obscured, this will make the right diagnosis by the homeopathic practitioner very hard.
Taking the same homeopathic remedies too long can exhaust the system of the animal (Atjo Westerhuis, author of Dog & Homeopathy). It is therefore not unusual to give the medicine untilluntil a change occurs. Especially with high potencies one has to be careful. Although one can use the simple 1st aid homeopathic household remedies without any risk, it is not recommendable to experiment in other cases.
After approx. 2 centuries not being taken serious by the majority of the regular doctors / vets, there are nowadays plenty among doctors that subscribe homeopathic remedies…with or without sufficient knowledge.
You can request a list of acknowledged homoeopathic vets at the Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereninging voor Homeopathie (KNVH) = .the Royal Society for Homeopathy.
There are plenty of good books about pets and homeopathy available in bookstores.
